Spring feels like it is here

Early March in the Sea 2 Sky corridor feels like spring has arrived.  The snow line is creeping higher on a daily basis, damn……………..Lets all pray for the winter to have one last installment !! Too much sunshine in Pemberton Meadows at the weekend.

Nikon D3S for live video production

without comments

I just used the Nikon D3S  as a ‘run and gun’ video camera to produce olympic highlight video virals for Tourism Whistler. Here are the end clips, they are all ungraded and produced as fast as possible for web release. The camera produces a nice web look but was very difficult to use as a true ‘run and gun’ tool.  The whole video DSLR theme still feels very young and not quite ready in some ways.

Quick shot from the last of the summers greenery in the Squamish woods. Just after rain the forest is super lush. Jonathon Desrosiers getting in amongst the green, Squamish BC. Damn shame about the T-shirt though, orange would have made the shot a lot better ! You live and learn I guess……

Crankworks 2009

without comments

This weekend is the final weekend of Crankworks mountain bike festival at Whistler. Here is a shot of last years winner of the infamous slopestyle event Andreu Lacondeguy, during a pratice session this week. Having watched his pratice sessions this week I wouldn’t personally be suprised if he takes the top spot again, his level of riding seemed to be much more adventurous than some of the competition….

Whitewater Rafting with Anthill films

Last week, I was out shooting with Anthill films again for the Tourism Whistler B-roll campaign. The location was the mighty Green river, ten minutes North of Whistler. The boats and support were provided by Wedge rafting.

Darcy Wittenburg working his cable camera magic

Darcy Wittenburg working his cable camera magic

Yesterday was spent shooting alongside Anthill films again for the up and coming Tourism Whistler B-roll campaign. the day began with a shoot in Meadow park of a family open canoeing down the River of Golden dreams, followed up with an afternoon on the valley trail with Darcy setting up super complex cable camera shots to link together a trail running shot with a golf shoot. After watching  Darcy’s cable camera shot live I can’t wait to see the finished product, it’s is definatley going to be some of the best Tourism B-roll outhtere, not many towns can say they that have that level of production put into there Advertising campaigns.

The morning shoot gave me chance to mess around with my latest toy, a waterproof camera bag/housing. I have messed about with all kinds of systems in the past for housing video cameras, but spent little time with an SLR housing. Most of the options used by surf photographers and divers are ridiculously expensive and tend to be dedicated to your brand and model of camera back. when you consider the rate that camera backs are outdating themselves these days, a 2-4 thousand dollar investment on a underwater housing is not that realistic unless you are selling a huuuuge number of surf or dive images. In the end I threw down on a made in China, ebay special, rip off of the ewa marine bags.

So far the bag seems to be staying dry, but I can’t say I am still not shitting myself putting my D3 into the water in a cheap ebay bag !! There also seems to be quite a learning curve as to what works with the bag as the most obvious half in half out shots really seem to require a lot of light and crystal clear water. at present most of the shots that seem to have been working are water line shots using the reflections and ripples in the water to create interest…

As far as kayaking goes, I haven’t had chance to use the bag, but I can’t wait, maybe the bottom pools at Tatlow creek might make for some super cool under water shots ?? we shall have to wait and see, in the meantime , lets hope it doesn’t leak in and flood my D3 ! that will certainly leave me up shit creek :-)

Kayak season is almost upon us…..

without comments

Well the snow is on it’s way out, pig flu is on it’s way in, the temperatures are rising and the rivers are slowly starting to fill for the summer. The rivers and creeks around the Squamish area are still low in relation to how warm it has been, it seems it may be another week or so before the season truly begins. Maybe the first of the rains will open the season with a bang ?

At present the Whistler area is slowly moving, but things like the Calaghan Creek are still too low, maybe a week or so will see them coming into the low end flows. Vancouver is starting to move and the Ashlu area maybe offering low Box Canyon flows.

All too soon the rivers will go from trickles to raging torrents and the start of the spring madness begins ! Spring kayaking always feels a little bit sketchy as you are often not as fresh as you are mid summer and the rivers are at their highest and most challenging flows. Spring in the Whistler area, usually means lots of laps on the super classic upper Cheak and high flow Calaghan runs, both offering big volume fun creeking…..

Anthill films

without comments

Anthill films are a Squamish based action sports film company, producing high end film products from commercials to action sports movies.  They have a huge list of credits to their name but are perhaps best known for their work as part of the ‘Collective series’  leading the way in Mountain bike Cinematography.

I have recently been working alongside Anthill whilst they shoot for Tourism Whistler’s ongoing B-roll campaign. It has been a fantastic experience to watch the team at work producing world class images from around the sea 2 sky area.

Check out Anthill website to read more about their work and to see their demo reel
